How to Choose Bamboo Flooring

Strand-woven vs horizontal vs vertical bamboo

All Cavalieri bamboo is strand-woven, the most durable bamboo construction available. Strand-woven bamboo shreds bamboo fibers, mixes them with a low-VOC resin, then heat-and-pressure-bonds the result into planks that hit Janka hardness ratings of 3,000–5,000+ — roughly twice as hard as red oak (~1,290) and harder than hickory or hard maple. Older horizontal and vertical bamboo (just glued strips) is far softer and not what we sell.

Eco-credentials and indoor air quality

Bamboo is technically a grass, harvested in 5–7 year cycles versus 20–80 years for hardwood trees. Our engineered bamboo is FloorScore®-certified for low-VOC indoor air quality, uses formaldehyde-free or ULEF adhesives, and qualifies for LEED credit on green-building projects. If sustainability matters in your selection, bamboo gives you a more eco-conscious story than vinyl, laminate, or even most hardwood.

Built for Florida humidity

Engineered bamboo is more dimensionally stable than solid bamboo or solid hardwood, with cross-ply construction that resists the cup-and-gap cycle that plagues solid wood in Central Florida's 40–75% indoor humidity swings. It can be installed floating click-lock, nail-down, or glue-down over wood or concrete subfloors with proper moisture testing. Like all wood-product floors, allow the planks to acclimate in your home for 72 hours before installation — we handle this as part of our installation service.

Color options and care

Natural strand-woven bamboo runs blonde-to-caramel, while carbonized and stained bamboo ranges from honey amber through deep espresso. The aluminum-oxide top coat is dent and scratch resistant for daily life, including pet claws — simply sweep, dust-mop, and damp-clean with a manufacturer-approved hardwood cleaner. Avoid wet mopping and standing water like you would any wood-product floor.

CALI Bamboo Flooring — Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about engineered bamboo flooring from Cavalieri Flooring in Orlando, FL.

Is bamboo flooring a good choice for Florida homes? +

Strand-woven bamboo is the most humidity-resistant bamboo option and performs better than traditional bamboo in Florida. In a consistently air-conditioned Central Florida home, quality engineered strand-woven bamboo performs well. For spaces with variable humidity like sunrooms or garages, SPC-core LVP is a more reliable choice. Our team can help you decide which product fits your specific space.

How does bamboo flooring compare to hardwood? +

Strand-woven bamboo is typically harder and more dent-resistant than most hardwood species — scoring 3,000–5,000+ on the Janka hardness scale versus ~1,290 for red oak and ~1,450 for hard maple. It is a sustainable, fast-growing material. However, it shares hardwood's sensitivity to moisture, making proper climate control important in Florida installations. For maximum moisture resistance, consider CALI's SPC vinyl collections instead.

How much does bamboo flooring cost installed in Orlando? +

Bamboo flooring materials typically cost $3–$8 per square foot. Installed cost in Orlando ranges from $6–$14 per square foot including labor and subfloor prep. Cavalieri Flooring provides free in-home estimates with exact pricing for your space — call 321-424-0546 or visit our showroom at 4301 36th St #101, Orlando, FL 32811.

Is bamboo flooring eco-friendly? +

Yes. Bamboo is one of the most sustainable flooring materials available. It is a grass that regenerates fully within 3–5 years after harvest, compared to 20–80 years for hardwood trees. Strand-woven bamboo uses the entire bamboo stalk with minimal waste. Our products are FloorScore® certified for low-VOC indoor air quality and qualify for LEED credit on green-building projects.

Can bamboo flooring be refinished? +

Solid and engineered bamboo floors can be lightly sanded and refinished, though not as many times as solid hardwood due to the thinner veneer layer on engineered products. Strand-woven bamboo is particularly hard and may require professional diamond-abrasive equipment for sanding. Consult our team at Cavalieri Flooring before attempting to refinish bamboo floors to avoid damaging the surface.

What installation methods work for bamboo flooring? +

Engineered bamboo can be installed floating (click-lock), nail-down, or glue-down over wood or concrete subfloors with proper moisture testing. Planks should acclimate in your home for 72 hours before installation. Cavalieri Flooring handles full professional installation including subfloor prep, moisture testing, and acclimation — request a free estimate or call 321-424-0546.
