Project Overview

University athletic facilities operate at an intensity level that most commercial environments never approach. A Division I locker room is in use before and after every practice, every game, and every weight training session — cycling through wet, sweaty athletes and their gear constantly throughout the season and into the offseason. The flooring in these spaces must handle water, cleaning chemicals, cleated shoes, dropped equipment, and constant foot traffic without showing premature wear, developing hygiene problems, or creating safety hazards through slipping.

Cavalieri Flooring was engaged to install new commercial vinyl flooring in the UCF men's locker room in Orlando. The project required material selection and installation methods appropriate for the specific demands of a collegiate athletic facility, with attention to both performance and aesthetics — a locker room that represents the UCF program is also a recruiting space that athletes and their families see during campus visits.

The Challenge: One-Day Turnaround Before the Locker Room Reopened

The biggest constraint was the schedule: the locker room had to be ready for use the next day, so the entire flooring job had to be completed in a single day. There was no room for an extended installation window or a delayed handoff. Our crew had to coordinate material staging, substrate preparation, installation, transitions, and cleanup in one tightly managed sequence while still meeting the performance and finish standards expected of a university athletic facility.

Athletic locker rooms present a distinct combination of challenges that differ from standard commercial flooring applications:

Our Approach: Commercial LVP Glue-Down

We selected a commercial-grade luxury vinyl plank with full-spread glue-down installation for this application. The glue-down method eliminates any floating panel gaps where water could infiltrate, and bonds every square inch of plank to the concrete substrate — creating a solid, waterproof surface with no movement or flex. Commercial LVP in this specification carries a heavy commercial wear layer and is rated for institutional cleaning schedules using concentrated disinfectants.

The concrete subfloor was prepared to the required flatness tolerance and moisture-tested before any material was installed. All edges and transitions — including the interface with the shower tile and the entry transition — were fitted with commercial-grade waterproof transition strips to prevent water migration from the adjacent wet areas.

The installation was planned and executed as a one-day turnaround because the locker room had to be used the next day. Material staging, floor preparation, installation, transitions, and final cleanup were sequenced to protect the handoff deadline without sacrificing the quality of the finished floor.

Results: A Facility-Grade Floor That Performs and Looks the Part

The completed locker room floor provided exactly what the facility needed — a hygienic, waterproof surface that cleans easily under the daily institutional cleaning regimen, provides adequate traction for wet foot traffic, and presents the clean, professional aesthetic appropriate for a Division I program's locker room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Locker rooms require flooring that handles constant water exposure from showers, wet shoes, and spills; resists athletic shoe traffic and dropped equipment; and can be sanitized effectively with commercial cleaning chemicals. Commercial LVP or sheet vinyl installed with glue-down adhesive is ideal — waterproof, seamless-look, and easy to clean. It must also meet slip-resistance requirements in wet areas for safety.
Floating vinyl installations are not appropriate for locker rooms. The constant moisture exposure from showers and wet traffic can infiltrate under floating planks, lifting them and creating unhygienic gaps. Glue-down LVP bonds directly to the substrate, eliminating this risk entirely. The full-bond installation also provides a more solid, stable feel underfoot — better for athletic use and foot-traffic endurance.
Commercial LVP in locker rooms should be damp-mopped or wet-mopped daily using commercial-grade neutral pH cleaners. Heavy-duty sanitizers and disinfectants are compatible with commercial LVP wear layers. Avoid using wax or polish on matte-finish commercial LVP — these create buildup that looks dull and can become slippery. A periodic deep clean with a commercial floor scrubber maintains the surface and removes embedded contamination.
Commercial vinyl flooring should stop at the shower area threshold, with appropriate waterproof transition strips. Inside the shower area, ceramic or porcelain tile with slip-resistant texture and properly graded slope to the drain is the correct surface — vinyl is not appropriate for direct shower exposure. The transition between the locker room vinyl and the shower tile should be designed to prevent water from migrating under the vinyl edge.
