Floating Click-Lock Installation

Before you begin installation, remember to P.A.C.E. yourself with the checklist below.

P.A.C.E. Pre-Installation Checklist

  • Prepare Job Site
  • Acclimation
  • Control Subfloor Moisture
  • Environmental Conditions
Quick Tip: Cavalieri Vinyl Pro with Mute Step requires no acclimation and can be installed right out of the box. The built-in Mute Step acoustic pad eliminates the need for additional underlayment.

Material Preparation

Add 5% extra material for cutting waste and grading allowance. Inspect all planks before installation; material has up to 5% permitted manufacturing defects per industry standards. If more than 5% is unusable, do not install — contact your retailer immediately. No warranty claims are accepted after installation of visibly defective material.

Moisture Requirements

Cavalieri vinyl is waterproof but is NOT a moisture barrier. A separate moisture barrier is required for floating installations on concrete or over crawl spaces.

  • Plywood/OSB subfloors: Require vapor barrier if moisture content exceeds 13%.
  • Concrete: Require moisture barrier — use 6-mil plastic, Cavalieri Complete, or Titebond 531+. Maximum 8 lbs per calcium chloride test or 90% RH in-situ probe.

Subfloor Preparation

Subfloor must be clean, flat, dry, and structurally sound. Wood subfloors must be securely fastened — nail or screw every 6" along joists to prevent squeaking. Sand high spots and fill low spots with Portland-based leveling compound. Subfloor must be flat to 3/16" per 10-foot radius.

  • Crawl spaces: Minimum 6-mil polyethylene sheeting over exposed earth. Minimum 18" air space between ground and floor joists. Adequate ventilation required.
  • Concrete must be fully cured (minimum 60 days old) and free of hydrostatic pressure.

Radiant Heat Compatibility

Vinyl Pro with Mute Step is compatible with radiant heat using the floating method only. Maximum surface temperature must not exceed 85°F. Turn system on 3 days before installation, lower to 65°F 24 hours before, and gradually increase temperature after installation.

Installation Steps

Step 1: Measure the room perpendicular to the direction of plank installation. Ensure the final row will be at least 1/3 plank width. Leave 1/4" expansion gap around all perimeter walls and fixed objects.

Step 2: Begin along the longest, straightest wall. Place spacers between the first row and the wall. Cut the tongue off the starting row for a clean edge.

Step 3: Connect planks end-to-end by angling the short end at approximately 20° and pressing down to engage the click-lock.

Step 4: At the end of each row, measure and cut the final plank using a utility knife (score and snap). Use the cut-off as the starter for the next row if at least 8" long.

Step 5: For subsequent rows, angle the long edge into the previous row at 20° and press down to lock. Stagger end joints by at least 6" between rows.

Step 6: Use a rubber mallet and tapping block to ensure proper engagement on both long and short ends. Never strike planks directly.

Step 7: For the final row, rip planks to width while maintaining the 1/4" expansion gap. Final row should be at least 1/3 plank width.

Step 8: Remove all spacers. Install transition moldings at doorways and baseboards or quarter-round to cover expansion gaps.

Quick Tip: When installing around pipes, drill the hole 3/4" larger than the diameter of the pipes. Always inspect long and short edges of each plank for gapping before moving to the next plank.

Glue-Down Installation

Adhesive Requirements

Use Titebond 675 adhesive exclusively for glue-down installations. The adhesive serves as both your bonding agent and vapor/moisture barrier — no separate barrier is needed.

Glue-Down Installation Steps

Step 1: Dry-fit the first two rows and establish a working line with a chalk line. Plan your layout to ensure the final row is at least 1/3 plank width.

Step 2: Apply Titebond 675 with the recommended notched trowel. Work in manageable sections and allow proper tack time per the adhesive guidelines.

Step 3: Press planks firmly into the adhesive. Stagger end joints by at least 6" between rows. Maintain 1/4" expansion gap around all walls and fixed objects.

Step 4: Roll the floor with a 100-lb roller after installation to ensure proper bonding. Allow 24 hours before allowing foot traffic.

Step 5: Clean any adhesive from the plank surface immediately with a damp cloth. Install baseboards and transition moldings after the adhesive has fully cured.

Note: Glue-down installation is NOT compatible with radiant heat systems. The Mute Step pad is compatible with Titebond 675 adhesive.

Care & Maintenance

Follow these guidelines to maintain the beauty and longevity of your Cavalieri Vinyl Pro with Mute Step flooring.

  • Sweep or vacuum regularly with a soft-bristle broom or vacuum without a beater bar.
  • Damp mop as needed using a pH-neutral vinyl floor cleaner. Avoid steam mops, abrasive cleaners, and wax-based products.
  • Wipe up spills promptly. While waterproof, standing water at seams should be cleaned quickly.
  • Use felt pads under furniture legs and protective mats under rolling chairs.
  • Place doormats at entrances to reduce tracked-in dirt and grit.
  • Maintain consistent indoor conditions: temperature 60°F–80°F, humidity 35%–55%.
  • Avoid prolonged direct sunlight exposure — use blinds or curtains to minimize UV damage.
